Go Mitch Go Foundation
The Go Mitch Go Foundation was officially formed in 2009 to honor the legacy of Mitchell Graham Whitaker. Mitchell passed away from complications associated with leukemia in 2007 at the age of 10. His story, determination, warrior spirit, and example have inspired donations of nearly $900,000 since 2005 to fund blood cancer research through the Leukemia Lymphoma Society and other partner organizations. Our foundation is committed to continuing this good work to find a cure, raise awareness, and assist families battling cancer. The last words that Mitchell spoke before passing away...."Keep fighting!".....shall be our rally cry. Take a little time to learn some more about us on this page....we hope that you join us!
May 15, 1997 - Sept 27,2007
Every child is special....and Mitchell was no exception. First born child and only son to John & Tracy Whitaker....brother to Meredith....he was kind to others, exceptionally bright, highly competitive, athletic, and tender hearted. At age 8, Mitchell was diagnosed with acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL) and began chemotherapy. Over the course of the next 2 years, he continued to excel in the classroom and on the baseball field despite his frequent hospital stays and chemotherapy. He had dreams of becoming a doctor and finding a cure for the disease that made his childhood a "roadblock" filled challenge.
Unfortunately, Mitchell relapsed in August of 2007 and passed away from the disease 45 days later.
His earthly journey had come to a close but his story, influence, and inspiration were just beginning to truly take root.........and continue to this day. The last words that Mitchell ever spoke were quite simple: Keep Fighting. The Go Mitch Go Foundation was formed to honor his legacy and help others.
A simple charter and vital cause:
Provide funding for organizations that conduct blood/bone cancer research and assist families struggling with these diseases.
Mitchell's story has inspired folks from all walks of life to join in this battle in some form or fashion since his initial diagnosis in 2005. However, in the fall of 2008, John & Tracy Whitaker recognized a need for an organization that allowed for perpetual fundraising to fund research. We received our 501c3 designation from the IRS in 2009 and have been passionately pursuing donors & partners ever since. We fill a unique role for several organizations by offering our time/talents as a "pass through" charity to fund their projects.
Throughout our brief history, we have been, and will continue to be strong supporters & funders of the Leukemia Lymphoma Society. We actively seek other partners that can efficiently move us toward a cure as well. In 2013, we met with and entered into a partnership with the David H. Koch Center for Integrative Cancer Research at MIT. We will be fundraising heavily for this group as part of our 2014 Spain Cycling tour to benefit the fine research work conducted at their facility.
Our approach is quite simple: Harness the passion for fitness with the passion for helping find a cure for blood cancer. Endurance sports are the perfect metaphor for the struggles that patients/families face daily. We seek out good people who want to improve the lives of others while improving their own.
As of 2013, our donor population is heavily centered around the Austin, Texas and Oklahoma City area simply due to the residence/vocations of the Whitaker family. As we look forward to 2014, we are excited about the potential to share Mitchell's story to a much larger national / international audience.
